Diffusion Bonding of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy: Metallurgical Aspects and Mechanical Promotes

  • Chapter
Diffusion Bonding 2

Abstract

This paper presents the results obtained on the diffusion bonding of Ti-6 A1-4 V alloy for aeronautical applications. It main objetive is the development of a new diffusion bonding procedure to produce joints in ti tanium alloys at lower temperature than the current methods.

High quality joints have been produced bonding at 850 °C with pressures of 4 MPa and times in the range from 90 and 120 min. A metallographic study by SEM-EDS has been performed to determinated the role of the diffusion bonding parameters and their influence on the microstructural changes occured in the bond interface. Grain growth of the parent alloy and the increase of the bonded area with time has been also measured.

Mechanical properties of the diffusion joints have been determined using different mechanical tests. Joint strenghts were meassured using tensile, shear and peel test, at room temperature. Fracture behaviour of the tested joints has been also described.
