Abstract

Results are described of a theoretical and experimental study of the collapse behaviour under lateral load of hybrid composite panels formed by bonding and bolting steel stiffeners to flat GRP sheets. Stiffeners, tapered at their ends, are terminated a short distance from panel edges in order to facilitate assembly of panels into a three-dimensional structure. Attention is focussed on the performance of joints and the complex behaviour of panels close to their edges, where a virtually ‘pin-jointed’ condition occurs. Conclusions are reached regarding the effectiveness of this form of construction.
