Abstract
This paper reports the design and evaluation of operating system policies for a parallel access machine based on the loosely-coupled cellular architecture. A hierarchical model is presented for the implementation of the distributed operating system, which disperses the overall control to many user abstract machines executing in parallel. Various cell management strategies are then put forward which attempt to maximise the utilisation of the system resources, while minimising communication overheads. A comprehensive simulation study has been conducted whose outcome provides a useful insight into the effectiveness of the proposed policies, which may be tailored to the needs of various other multi-user parallel processing systems.
