Influence of Nickel on the Fracture Behaviour of Fe-0.2c Alloy

  • Chapter
Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures

Abstract

The effect of nickel on the fracture toughness of Fe-0.2C alloy under static as well as dynamic.Conditions has been investigated. Nickel addition significantly enhances the impact toughness and the dynamic fracture toughness JIC of Fe-0.2C alloy with only a marginal effect on the ductile initiation fracture toughness JIC. The increase in toughness under dynamic conditions can be attributed to alloy softening brought about by the nickel addition at high strain rates.
