It is important to distinguish between the terms data catalogue and database. In modern terms database now refers to data stored in a manner that optimises retrieval of the data with a database management system. At present the most efficient form of such systems for the type of data developed from paleomagnetic studies is the Relational Database Management System (RDBMS).
