Abstract
There is a Kuhnian crisis in cognitive science. This is one reason for the enormous increase in connectionist research in the last five years. Reflecting on the problems that have provoked the crisis, and the reasons why connectionism is attractive as a response to those problems, has led us to a view of cognition and cognitive processing that we think deserves serious consideration whatever one may think of connectionism. Our main purpose in this paper is to draw attention to this neglected region in the logical space of views about cognition.
