Abstract

In this essay I examine the conceptions of empirical and theoretical equivalence developed by Reichenbach and Quine. I shall show that they fail to do justice to important structural facts of the world and to the status of mathematical knowledge within science.

I am indebted to the participants of the Oberseminar ‘Grundprobleme der analytischen Philosophie’ at the University of München for helpful discussions and to Marshall Kavesh for correcting and improving my English.
