Large Scale Cosmic Instability

Abstract

Spectral distortions in cosmic background radiation can create instabilities in matter, whose possible role in generating large scale structure is outlined here. A promising physical mechanism is sketched, based on Lyα resonance scattering, which exponentially amplifies perturbations in neutral hydrogen density on large scales after recombination.
