Abstract
Field mapping at 1:25000 scale of a 250 km2 area in the western part of the Wuqbah Block (Oman Mountains) has enabled us to revise the distribution of rocks of the Semail Ophiolite Nappe, the Metamorphic Sheet, Haybi Volcanics (Umar Group), Exotics (Misfah Group) and Hawasina Sediments (Hamrat Duru Group). The large Exotic block (Hawrat al Asan) was recognized as mainly Triassic in age.
Comparison of the resulting geological map with enhanced decorrelation stretched Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) false-color images, using channels within the short wavelength infrared part of the spectrum, has shown a very strong correlation between the two mapping methods.
Mapped areas of layered/laminated gabbros, the shape and distribution of the sheeted dyke complex and the associated isotropic gabbros, altered regions in the mantle and crustal sequence, and even newly mapped outcrops of sheeted dykes and metamorphic rocks, are all visible on the TM images.
