I have serious qualms about the wording of my topic, especially about the expression “preferential treatment.” In addition, I do not think the question I am to address looms as an important issue in the current literature. Nonetheless, I think it is of considerable interest to explore the different cases to be made for minorities and women, because such an investigation can open up insights into the nature of racism and sexism in our society. Moreover, the picture of racism and sexism, that I think emerges has important consequences for the issue of preferential treatment.
