Abstract
Recent findings indicate that controlled release oral morphine sulphate tablets (MS Contin®*tablets; (MSC)) could play a useful role in postoperative pain management. This preparation has been thoroughly evaluated, and widely employed, for the control of cancer-related pain. There is reason to expect, however, that MSC might offer postoperative patients a means to prolonged, effective analgesia with reduced dependency on the nursing staff (1), while at least partly obviating unwelcome injections that can only add to the patient’s discomfort (2). This approach may also reduce the number of peaks and troughs in pain intensity by providing less fluctuation in the blood concentration of morphine.
