Abstract

The larynx extends from the root of the tongue to the trachea. It projects ventrally between the great vessels of the neck. The skeletal framework of the larynx is formed of cartilages which are connected by ligaments and membranes and moved by a number of muscles. The laryngeal skeleton consist of the hyoid bone, the thyroid, cricoid, the epiglottic and the paired arytenoid cartilages. There are three intralaryngeal compartments: the paired lateral paraglottic spaces and the midline preepiglottic space.
