Abstract
Contaminated industrial sites are an issue of major environmental concern although this should not deviate public attention from other critical environmental challenges. Specific subjects are once in a while put forward into the focus of public debate. They will often foster unjustified fears which, in turn, prompt premature action lacking any sound deliberation and coordination.
