Abstract
With a progressing succession in abandoned meadows there appear new species, while those that were present there before retreat. The process is governed by two mechanisms: (a) the free-space colonization mechanism; (b) a mechanism that enables species to survive or leads to their retreat. These mechanisms are closely related to the morphological and biological properties of plants, particularly their growth type and reproduction mode.
