Abstract

Previously undetected binaries consisting solely of degenerate stellar components have been discovered or their existence inferred by three different techniques, the results of which are discussed in this paper. The first and most useful method is the successful detection of periodic radial velocity variations due to orbital motion. Secondly, close binary evolution may be the only way of explaining the existence of stars having derived masses safely below the mass limit for core helium ignition. Finally, at least three stars exhibit inconsistencies between their line spectra and colors which can be explained if the spectra are composite.
