Drying Complex Porous Materials-Modelling and Experiments

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 196))

Abstract

Most of the information which is available in the drying literature is theroetical and deals with homogeneous, isotropic materials. In practice many materials of interest are both heterogeneous and anisotropic. In this paper past modelling efforts will be reviewed and some recent results for complex materials will be presented. The importance of experimental measurements to compliment modelling efforts is emphasized through the presentation of experimental results which utilized gamma attenuation to obtain saturation distributions and infra-red absoprtion to measure local surface moisture content. These experimental rsults demonstrate that under certain conditions a drying front develops at the interior as well as at the surface.
