Abstract
Over the past fifteen years, a group of academic theorists has coalesced into a self-described new school of Marxism. Variously labeled “analytical Marxism,” “neoclassical Marxism,” “game-theoretic Marxism,” and “rational choice Marxism,” the school’s most influential theorists are G. A. Cohen (1989), Jon Elster (1985; 1986) and John Roemer (1981; 1982; 1986a; 1986b; 1988). Others associated with the new school include Pranab Bardhan (1984), Robert Brenner (1989), Alan Carling (1986), Leif Johansen (1972), Adam Przeworksi (1986), Ian Steedman (1977), Phillipe van Parijs (1983) and Erik Olin Wright (1982; 1985). I will refer to the ideas of this group as “analytical Marxism” (AM), the label most frequently used.
