Abstract
In the recent past, there has been significant interest in the interactions among normative, descriptive, and prescriptive theories of decision making. The volumes by Bell, Raiffa, and Tversky 1988) and Fishburn and LaValle (1989) present numerous viewpoints on these theories. An important aspect of this work is research on sets of axioms for normative decision making. Increasingly, these axioms have tried to account for human characteristics of decision making that have been descriptively observed. Contributions to this work include Bell (1982), Machina (1982), Becker and Sarin (1987), Fishburn (1988), and Luce (1988). Sarin (1988) and Keller (1992) both summarize many key issues of this work. However, these works rarely address the axioms appropriate for prescriptive decision making. That is the main concern of this chapter.
