Abstract
Fibrous ion exchangers have been synthesised using polypropylene staple as a cheap, stable and robust base. styrene was graft copolymerised onto polypropylene fibres as a starting point. various anionic groups were then fixed on this material to find the most effective ion exchanger for the selective recovery of gold in the presence of other metal cyanides. The gold-loading capacities and selectivities of functionalised fibres with strong base or guanidine functional groups compared favourably with a conventional anion exchange resin. The physical properties of the fibres show that operation in packed beds is feasible.
