The Shape of the Galaxy

There is growing evidence that our Galaxy is a complex triaxial system. In this article, I begin by reviewing orbital structure in a triaxial galaxy and then review the evidence for the bulge being barred and the evidence about whether the Galactic spheroid is triaxial. I conclude by discussing the implications of triaxiality for galaxy formation and evolution.
