The Evolution of the Galactic Bulge

Part of the Astrophysics and Space Science Library book series (ASSL, volume 180)

The central stellar bulge of the Milky Way is a distinct stellar population with age of order 10 Gyr and abundance range from -1.5 to nearly +1.0 dex. A portion of the AGB population in the bulges of the Milky Way, M31, and M32 is too luminous to have evolved from a stellar population as old as the globular clusters. Because of its distinct structure and stellar population, the history of the bulge is likely to be unique among galactic stellar populations, but may resemble that of elliptical and S0 galaxies.
