Building Modeling Based on Concepts of Autonomy

  • Chapter
Book cover Artificial Intelligence in Design ’92

Abstract

A knowledge-based approach to building modeling is described. It is formulated on concepts of autonomy, and based on the idea that asynchronous design decisions in distributed organizations and among concurrent decision processes cannot be accomplished by a centralized software approach. Also described are initial efforts to implement the approach in a prototype integrated, distributed building design environment for modeling and performance evaluation applications. Included are overviews of (1) previous experience with large-scale building modeling efforts; (2) a specification for user-interfaces as tools to explore design spaces; and (3) a data communication module that interconnects distributed and concurrent applications for the exchange of data and recognition of conflicts between different decisions.
