Abstract
The ability of PIV to determine the flow characteristics of a turbulent airflow and a turbulent air-particle flow field is discussed. PIV has been able to determine the spatial structure of a grid generated turbulent air-flow and the velocity data from the PIV flow record has proven to be accurate when compared with LDA measurements. Both velocity and concentration behaviour of a particle jet have been obtained from the PIV flow record. Furthermore, the potential capabilities of PIV to simultaneously determine the behaviour of both phases of an air-particle flow field are discussed in the context of particles interacting with the coherent structures of a grid generated turbulent flow field.
