Abstract

For more than a decade coronary artery bypass graft surgery has increasingly become an accepted method of treatment of the patient with intractable angina. More recently early revascularisation has been used to prevent damage to the threatened myocardium. Early on, it became obvious that the physical results were excellent but unexpectedly there was little or no functional improvement in many patients following an apparently successful operation. Studies have demonstrated that the quality of life remains poor in 25–40% of patients [1–3]. Many psychological, social, economic and personality factors have been shown to contribute to a poor outcome; important among these non-cardiac causes is the emotional state of the patient.
