Abstract

We have used light scattering to study the colloid-polymer interaction. We have analyzed our results in terms of the virial expansion to an exact solution of a binary hardsphere mixture model with the Percus-Yevick closure. We have found that the un-functionalized polymer interacts with a hardsphere potential with respect to the colloids, causing an effective attractive interaction between the colloidal particles due to the depletion effects. Qualitative agreement is obtained for the observed phase separation in a colloid-polymer mixture. However, for the amine and zwitterion end-functionalized polymers, it is found that the adsorbed polymers effectively stabilized the colloidal system through the repulsive interaction of the polymer chains. We have estimated from our data the degrees of adsorption for the polymer with the two functional groups.
