Abstract

According to the textbooks of Braunwald and Harrison [1,2] and others [3] even transthoracic echocardiography seems to play no role in decision making in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism. Other authors [4] use echocardiography only as an diagnostic adjunctive method. The role of echocardiography will only change, when direct signs instead of indirect signs of pulmonary embolism can be demonstrated, in order to improve therapeutic decision making.
