Clusters and Superclusters of Galaxies

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 366))

Abstract

The ROSAT observatory with its high spatial resolution X—ray telescope is an ideal instrwnent for the study of clusters of galaxies. In the first part of the mission an All Sky X-ray Survey was conducted with ROSAT. In this paper we discuss first results of ROSAT observations of galaxy clusters from the All Sky Survey and some early pointed observations.

Results from detailed morphological studies on some prominent nearby clusters with high enough photon yield in the survey like Virgo, Perseus, nad AWM7 are presented to illustrate the capabilities of ROSAT in galaxy cluster studies. In addition we discuss the prospects for detections of clusters of galaxies in the All Sky Survey and their possible implication for cosmological research.
