Abstract

In 1990 the southern sky was surveyed at Parkes using a multi-beam receiver at frequencies of 843 and 4850MHz. The surveys cover the Declination range between +10 and −90 degrees and are complete in Right Ascension, an area of 7.30 steradians. Preliminary analysis of the 5Ghz data indicates a flux limit of about 30mJy, and we estimate we will find some 90 000 new sources above this limit, or some 90 radio sources per Schmidt field. Such source densities, combined with accurate positions from the Australia Telescope, means that this survey will be ideally suited to an automated identification procedure using the Digitised Sky survey data from the UK Measuring Machines and Schmidt Telescope plate material.
