Abstract

Starch gel electrophoresis was first described by Smithies (1955). Isoenzymes and alloenzymes were separated electrophoretically by starch gel electrophoresis. Besides other biochemical markers isozymes became a useful tool for different applications in plant breeding in the last few years. For example, isozyme analysis have been used to describe and identify varieties, which can’t be distinguished by morphological markers only; to obtain genetic structures of populations; to check genetic purity of hybrid seeds. Here, it will be describe the electrophoretic procedure used for identification of genotypes and genetic purity control of hybrid seeds.
