Fundamental Study Of Static Sealing Characteristics Of Solidified Oils At High Pressure

Part of the book series: Fluid Mechanics and its Applications ((FMIA,volume 8))

Abstract

For a basis of the application to static seals, the solidification phenomena of oils were observed as entrapped films after impacts on Hertzian contact. Here, profile changes due to leakage from annular contact areas outside of the inner solidified films were observed with the aid of interferometry. These static sealing and leakage characteristics were investigated using mineral oils, hydrogenated tar oils with extremely high pressure-viscosity coefficients and a conventional sealant. The results were correlated with the products of the pressure-viscosity coefficient and Hertzian pressure. An empirical formula to estimate the limiting time of leakage is derived in a dimensionless expression. Furthermore, the effect of hardness, which limits the yield pressure of a ccntact surface was also observed. Finally, some discussions concerning possibility of practical application of results of the present investigation are added.
