Abstract
Combinations of a pair of hard materials are generally used as rubbing surfaces of mechanical seals for corrosive environment or for slurry fluid. There has been little investigations done in this respect. In present study, the wear and friction test in hot water were carried out using seal rings and mating rings made of hard materials such as cemented carbide, silicon carbide, alumina, silicon nitride and zirconia. Various modes of failures occurred on the rubbing surfaces were discussed in view of mechanical and thermal properties, and tribochemical reaction. In particular, it is proposed that numerous microscopic cracks generated on cemented carbide, which have been so far explained by thermocrack theory, are caused by the co-operative effects between the residual tensile stress and tribochemical action.
