A Meteorological Information Processing System (MIPS)

  • R. Heylen

At the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) an integrated meteorological data processing system has recently become operational. The system, based on distributed processing in a networked environment, is used for the acquisition, processing, presentation and distribution of meteorological data. Data acquisition systems for reception of meteorological satellites, telecom computers for the exchange of weather radar data and for retrieval of GTS and ECMWF data, are interconnected. Satellite pictures, radar data and graphical output are combined into composite products and visualized on workstations. All meteorological data files can be shared throughout a local area network and are used for both operational and scientific research purposes. The modular system design will easily allow for future expansion.
