Abstract
Although chemicals in the form of natural products have been used by mankind from prehistoric times, man-made chemicals, particularly man-made organic chemicals, came into common use only relatively recently. The first breakthrough occurred during the second half of the nineteenth century when synthetic dyes began to be manufactured on a large scale and synthetic pharmaceuticals came into use.
