Abstract
Microemulsions are thermodynamically stable, transparent, low-viscosity mixtures of oil, water and an amphiphile. Such a definition is of limited usefulness without a description either of the phase behaviour of the mixtures or of some of the microscopic structures encountered in the different types of microemulsions. In fact, it will be advantageous to say something about both of these areas for a more complete description and understanding of the term microemulsion.
