Abstract

In developed countries pyogenic infection accounts for the large majority of cases of liver abscess, whilst in the rest of the world amoebic abscess is the more common. Both may present in a non-specific way with vague symptoms of ill health and fever and not necessarily showing any localizing features referable to the liver: thus nothing can replace clinical awareness and suspicion. Both continue to have a high mortality if untreated1. Fortunately, when they are considered, investigations such as isotope scanning, ultrasound, and CT have greatly increased diagnostic accuracy.
