Austrian Economics: Tensions and New Directions

Part of the book series: Recent Economic Thought Series ((RETH,volume 30))

Abstract

I suppose that the invitations to Mario Rizzo and me to write afterwords to this volume on Austrian economics reflects Bruce Caldwell’s and Stephan Boehm’s recognition that there are few “practicing Austrians” among the other contributors.1 In a volume of essays criticizing and calling for new directions in a research program, it is appropriate to provide some space to proponents of the research program being criticized, if only to flag any gross misinterpretations or other errors resulting from insufficient familiarity with the literature. Given that Israel Kirzner is the only practicing Austrian who was assigned to discuss a specific essay, it has been left to the authors of the afterwords to scrutinize the rest of the volume from an Austrian perspective.
