High Temperature Desulfurization of Coal Derived Syngas: Bench Scale and Pilot Plant Sorbent Evaluations

Abstract

Texaco Inc. and the U. S. Department of Energy have conducted a joint 5-year cooperative research program to demonstrate the integration of hot syngas clean-up with the Texaco Coal Gasification Process. As part of this program, theoretical studies and bench scale experiments were performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Research Triangle Institute, and Texaco’s Beacon and Montebello Research Laboratories to identify effective in-situ and external desulfurization sorbents. Pilot scale demonstrations with the most promising sorbents were performed in the pilot scale gasifiers at Texaco’s Montebello Research Laboratory. The results of this high temperature desulfurization research are summarized, and a comparison of the bench scale tests and pilot scale demonstrations is provided.
