Abstract
In this section we review briefly the range of characteristics of the four primary factors defined in the previous section that are likely to be met with in the demersal fisheries of Northern Europe, with special reference to those for plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) and haddock (Gadus aeglefinus L.). In each case we specify here the simplest mathematical form that gives a reasonable representation of the factor in question in terms of parameters which can, in the first instance, be assumed to be constant and independent, and indicate the later section (in Part II) where a more detailed treatment is given.
