Abstract
Cancun is the principal tourist resort in Mexico. Concerned with the tourist impact on the coastal environment, an assessment was made to examine the environment’s vulnerability to tourist development. The procedure considered the functional and resilence characteristics of the geoecosystems and compared each geoecosystem with the planned land uses and activities appropriate for tourist development. This gives a greater flexibility in defining the environmental opportunities and restrictions for planners to improve the land uses and activities. Overall, this gave better environmental managment and environmental conservation.
