Abstract

The effect of cysteine on bile acid synthesis in primary cultured rat hepatocytes was investigated. Cysteine was found to increase bile acid synthesis at a concentration of 5 mM cysteine. This effect of cysteine was not removed by the addition of DL-buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO), a specific inhibitor of gluthathione (GSH) biosynthesis. Cysteine was also found to modulate the thyroid hormone action on bile acid synthesis. These results suggest that cysteine may stimulate bile acid synthesis in a direct manner and not by increasing the production of GSH, and act co-operatively with the thyroid hormone on bile acid synthesis in primary cultured rat hepatocytes.
