Abstract
The former Soviet Union has the largest mineral industry in the world. In 1983, the latest year for which data was available, mineral production was valued at US$221.3 billion, which was about 24 percent of global minerals output value. The market value of minerals which can be sold on the domestic and world markets was estimated to be about 31 to 35 trillion rubles in 1991. In 1990, minerals and mineral products accounted for 51.6 percent of the total exports, while mineral imports accounted for only eight percent of total imports.
