Lamellae in Melt-Crystallized Polymers

Crystallization of Polymers

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 405))

Abstract

Knowledge of melt-crystallized lamellae and their association in polymers has increased greatly following the introduction of new techniques of specimen preparation prior to electron microscopy, principally permanganic etching.

Spherulites are constructed from a framework of individual dominant lamellae which diverge when they branch, often at giant screw dislocations distributed in space. In banded spherulites the dislocations are isochiral.

The different lamellar profiles observed for polyethylene in different crystallization conditions are related to adjustments to fold packing.

The most regular surfaces are in ridged lamellae whereas S-shaped profiles develop as folds in an existing lamellar diffuse together, interact and generate surface stresses. Banded spherulites result from a continuation of this process.
