Abstract
ELLA is a hardware description language which originated from the UK’s Defence Research Agency in 1982 and has been under continuous development until the present. This paper describes the use of the language, its underlying model and some of the rationale behind it. The main part of the paper contains descriptions of the particular features which distinguish it from other HDLs in the field.
