Abstract

The potential role for incorporating the production of alternative tree and shrub products into normal farm management is an area which has received little attention to date. Despite a 40,000 year history of exploitation by Aborigines very few indigenous plant species are commercially exploited in Australia [Cribb and Cribb, 1981], apart from those for timber and fodder uses. Equally neglected has been the production of alternative products from non-indigenous species. In this paper, we examine the position by focussing on vegetation products, apart from timber and fodder which are potential sources of revenue. This paper reviews the current economic significance of many of the present alternative tree and shrub industries in Australia, the research and development (or lack of) associated with these products and finally, the potential role they could play in enhancing on-farm income.
