Isolation of Arabidopsis homologues to yeast cell cycle genes

  • Chapter
Molecular and Cell Biology of the Plant Cell Cycle

Abstract

The aims of our laboratory are the isolation and characterisation of cell cycle genes from Arabidopsis, with a view to understanding their role in plant growth and development. To this end we have been testing different molecular strategies in order to isolate and identify Arabidopsis homologues to yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cell cycle genes. Using various techniques we have identified Arabidopsis DNA sequences with homology to ubiquitin carrier proteins, and to the S. pombe genes, cdc25, sue1 cdc22 and suc22. In this paper we describe the characterisation of the Arabidopsis UBCa gene and the identification of a suc1 protein in Arabidopsis and pea. Preliminary results concerning the analysis of expression of these genes are also reported.
