Abstract
In the characterization of permeabilities in an oil reservoir, two main problems are identified: i) due to shortage of “hard” permeability data, “soft” information provided by other sources should be taken into account, ii) The non-additive nature of the variable does not allow for direct spatial inference.
To overcome jointly these usual difficulties, a new methodology, combining Correspondence Analysis and Multi-phase Simulation, is proposed. With the Correspondence Analysis technique, used as a qualitative regression tool, a grade of membership of each sample to a permeability class is assigned, constituting a soft data set. Based on the categorized hard and soft information, the all set of permeability classes is obtained, via a multi-phase simulation technique, reproducing, in the final maps, the volume proportions of each class and the contiguity architecture of the all set, as revealed by the multi-phase covariances.
The methodology was tested in a case study regarding an extensively recognized oil reservoir.
