Abstract

Although an increase in the number of LDL particles, as seen in familial hypercholesterolemia or hyperapobetalipoproteinemia, is strongly associated with the development of CAD (1,2), elevations of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL) have not been established clearly as — cardiovascular risk factor in prospective studies. However, in case-control studies, triglycerides are often, on univariate analysis, — risk factor for the presence of CAD (3). The heterogeneity within TRL and the different metabolic fates of the various TRL particles may, in part, explain those findings.
