Abstract

One of the major problems in comparing the yield response of rice to N added as an Azolla green manure is that it is difficult to apply an exact amount of N as fresh Azolla. This is due to the fact that the % dry weight and % N of the fresh Azolla biomass tends to vary from day to day and with the method of draining excess water. An exact amount of N as Azolla can be applied if the material is first air or oven-dried. However, the result of Kumarasinghe et al. (1986) indicate that drying reduces the N availability from Azolla by 30%.
