Abstract
Laser technology (CD-ROM) has offered electronic mass storage capacity for medical databases in the mid-1980s for the first time. Since then the structure of classical bibliographic databases has remained essentially unchanged, hovever the last seven years brought along dramatic advances of computer hardware-, networking and namely software-technology. This already has brought new dimensions to MEDLINE retrieval systems in recent years and will continue to introduce new performance aspects and concepts in the next few years. We identify and describe five main areas of change: data compression, hardware & network compatibility, user interface, retrieval system and search strategy.
