Abstract
In the southern part of the river Rhine in the last decades many dykes had been built to diminish the number of flood events. Caused by these arrangements the danger of flood damage increased in the 25 km2 large area called “Rastatter Rheinniederung” directly downstream this channel-like Rhine section. Here flood protection is also needed but it should be done without cutting off the existing flood plain from the flow regime of the Rhine to preserve its ecological stability.
